Treasurer/publicity officer of the Nambucca Valley Cricket Association, Nigel Wilbow, said about 80 players had signed up, which was “heaps better than anticipated”.
He said teams were made up of players from all age groups.
“There are some of the younger players who play Under 14s in the morning and then join the seniors in the afternoon.”
The teams this season are made up of four from Macksville (Nambucca Hotel, Nambucca Hotel Colts, Macksville Country Club and Macksville Ex-Services Club) plus Scotts Head, Bowraville and the Pub with No Beer (the renamed Star Hotel team).
Games start this Saturday with the draw as follows:
* Pub with No Beer v Nambucca Hotel Colts at Taylors Arm
* Macksville Country Club v Macksville Ex-services at Donnelly Welsh Fields
* Scotts Head v Nambucca Hotel at Scotts Head
* Bowraville has the BYE.
It is not too late to sign up … make your presence felt at one of the weekend games.
Upgrade of Phillip Hughes Oval:
The signs still say it’s Thistle Park but behind the scenes work is going ahead to make Phillip Hughes Oval the emerald jewel of the shire’s cricket grounds.
The oval was renamed last year in honour of Australian cricketer, the late Phillip Hughes, who called Macksville home.
The home ground of a number of local teams plus the shire’s Premier League Team, three grants have been the financial injection the oval needed.
An initial $18,000 grant was earmarked for an upgrade of the pitch and the installation of an irrigation system.
Two more grants, including a $331,000 one in July (shared equally between the State Government and Nambucca Shire Council) will see a machinery shed and amenities block/pavilion built onsite plus a white picket fence … and possibly a car park if funds stretch that far.
Nigel said the committee was thrilled with the success of its grant applications and extremely grateful for the support of both the council and Melinda Pavey.
