I HAVE been a loyal customer of Macksville Foodworks Supermarket for 16 years. I am however shocked and disappointed when I see free single use plastic bags still being handed out to customers.

After leaving my feedback, Foodworks replied that “the management team are currently determining the trends and feedback from our regular customers in the use of plastic bags and other alternatives” and that they “will continue to monitor our customers shopping trends over the next few months and discuss further action after this”.
Foodworks Macksville is a great supermarket in so many ways. Their customer support is excellent; their staff are friendly and helpful and visible. They respond to requests for particular products and hence stock items that Woolies have deleted or replaced with their home brand. But they still give out these plastic bags when all the major supermarkets have stopped.
Woolworths is now seen as caring for the environment and Foodworks, which brands itself as “community focused”, is still supplying plastic that pollutes the Nambucca River and our pristine beaches and countryside or are concentrated into landfill after a few minutes use. Plastic bags choke wildlife and take years to break down into toxic micro particles that then enter our food chain.
Does Foodworks really want a major point of difference between themselves and Woolies to be their continued use of single use plastic bags and a perceived indifference to the environment and the welfare of the community? Woolies may or may not care about the environment but they most certainly care about their image. Take note, Foodworks.
If you would like Foodworks to stop issuing these plastic bags you can leave feedback in the box at the front of the store or better still on their Facebook page.
It is time for Foodworks to do the right thing.
