Hardiness beyond doubt would best describe those 13 Kempsey Veterans Golf Club members who, despite the inclement weather, turned up last Tuesday for their usual weekly outing.

Facing a course that had remarkably survived the elements, the baker's dozen were keen for action and they really appreciated the decision by their captain, Robert Dykes, to give the go-ahead for the scheduled stableford event.
Naturally he had had talks prior with the greenkeeper, Tony Janson, regarding the do's and dont' s (so to speak) and the use of motorised carts was refused. Hence the quick back home by an unhappy few.
I know a couple of members who had been caught napping on a recent (not really) day when the event was abandoned and the willing group continued on into the last five holes.
They were virtually wet as shags on returning to the clubhouse and despite ageing years their memory of a nasty bout of influenza is still bright.
So the revamped shortened 9-hole stableford went ahead after the Social Club's field had passed on by following a much-earlier tee-off. "A beautiful morning it was," one noted early player stated in jest later in the week.
And a report from our financial controller, Robert Johnston, leaned a little to similar beliefs, only suggesting that "the course was nice, damp, but not sloppy."
"Thirteen of us brave souls didn't squib the conditions and rain did stay away right until the end of play," said Johnno.
The supplied report told of Graeme Hall and Terry Hyland being the respective winner and runner-up and that there was no nearest the pin.
Now, delving into exactly what did occur last Tuesday was that actual scores - good or bad - were all but forgotten and a draw from the pack was utilised to decide the day's outcome.
New Srixons replaced the $20 voucher for Graeme, whilst Terry put just the one more in his pocket.
Fitting rewards, too, for they came quite a distance to take part - Graeme is from Stuarts Point and Moparrabah is Terry's departure point of a Tuesday.
Now, what's on today could well be anyone's guess as the annual Foursomes Championships, to be played over 18 holes, is set down for decision.
Any further rain between the time of writing (so to speak) and around 7.30 this morning may force a change and Captain Robert will have been looking to the heavens for some 40 hours or so.
Remember back last year...it was Chris Hudson and Terry Hyland making every post a winner to claim the gross title and this duo will be the early favourites for a repeat performance.
The same can be suggested for Doug Magennis and Bob Garner to make it back-to-back nett champions.
Rules in foursomes play is for each player in turn to drive off alternate tees, whilst it is shot for shot until that final putt is made on each hole. Them's the rules, eh!
Any further enquiries should be made to our official starter, Brody (Clarke), when nominating and all visitors are invited to take part. Give the Club a call on 65626291.
