With the women’s sport growing professionally, country competitions and clubs are creating pathways for girls to compete in tackle competitions at a junior level.
Kempsey Dragons president Reuben Jones believes it’s a step in the right direction.
“The Women’s State of Origin and Women’s NRL competition has definitely created a need for junior girls tackle rugby league competitions,” Jones told the Argus.
“There’s been a lot of interest from Kempsey girls for the past few years and I am confident we will be able to field a side next season.”
The structure is still up in the air, with Group Two only in the early stages of organising the girls competition.
“It will depend on numbers and interest, it could be a nines competition but hopefully there’s enough girls to play full 13-a-side,” Jones said.
Jones encourages young girls to get involved in the growing sport.
“Rugby league is a great sport and the girls really enjoy playing it,” Jones said.
“Come and give it a go.”
The Kempsey Dragons will begin taking registrations for the 2019 season in January but Jones encourages girls and their families to show their expressions of interest in the girls tackle team by contacting the Kempsey Dragons on their Facebook page.
The Under-15.5s girls league tag competition will still run, with girls eligible to play in both if they are the right age.
