Fourteen Coffs Coast members were part of the 15,500 participants from over 40 countries competing in the 11th Pan Pacific Masters Games held at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast last week.
The Gold Coast turned on perfect weather for the nine day event, which has become the world’s biggest biennial Masters Games.
Pan Pacs is currently on par in terms of participation levels with some of the biggest sporting occasions in the world such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.
Twelve of the members from the local Coffs Coast Club teamed up with paddlers from Ballina, Grafton and Camden Haven to compete under the Far North Coast banner winning in three different age categories in the 500 metres, 200 metres races and a 4.8 km Round the Island race.
The two other members were part of the Motley Crew Mid North Coast team along with paddlers from Port Macquarie, Nambucca, Kempsey, Taree, Forster and the Hunter winning gold in their Seniors 60 plus categories.
One member, Caz Williams, also won gold medals in the Cancer Survivors’ category in both the 500 and 200 metre races.
Participants compete in their age group needing no qualifying standards or times to enter. The only criterion for entry is a minimum age for each sport, which for the majority is 30 years.
Next weekend the competition continues for the Coffs Coast team as they head south to compete in the annual Forster Regatta on November 17 and 18, and they feel confident that their winning streak will continue.
The Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club paddles all year around with four training sessions each week on the Bellinger River at Mylestom or Bonville Waters at Sawtell.
