The independent Ageing and Disability Commissioner will be granted expanded powers to initiate investigations, follow up complaints, apply for search warrants and seize evidence.
They will work with specialist police in each area command to carry out investigations and find abusers.
The commissioner will begin operations on July 1 next year and the establishment comes weeks after the federal government announced a Royal Commission into the aged care sector.
The government clampdowns come after horrific cases of abuse across NSW and the country made headlines throughout the year.
