Instead a terrifying incident on the road into the little town has left Liz traumatised and adamant she will never return.
“It was 12.15 (am) on Thursday and we turned off the highway onto the Scotts Head Rd; we came round the bend and under the bridge, where we saw a 4WD parked … we drove past and he immediately started following us,” Liz said.
“He was right on our tail and when my partner sped up so did he, we slowed down, so did he … he then overtook us and disappeared.
“But then he was there again, ahead of us, pulled up right in the middle of the road – we slowed right down and locked our windows and doors and then drove around him.
“Within seconds he was behind us again, inches from us with all eight of his high power hunting lights on and blinding us from behind.
“He overtook us at high speed and we thought that was the end of it but then we passed the little bridge at Clayholes Rd and he was there behind us again. He must have hidden beside the bridge, we didn’t notice him when we passed.
“At this stage I knew we were in trouble, we were 6.2km from Scotts and I rang Triple 0. He kept pushing us to 120 and 140kph, my partner nearly tipped the car twice … it was terrifying. We were talking to Triple 0 all the time now.
“As we came into Scotts, we headed for the caravan park where we saw a light – there was a white car there with its lights on and two other cars.
My partner was yelling that it was a knife, about 12 inches, twice as long as his hand
“The boom gate was down and as we started to turn around, the 4WD was blocking the driveway exit. He winds down the window and moves his arm and I thought he was getting a gun and dropped to the floor. My partner was yelling that it was in fact a knife, about 12 inches, twice as long as his hand.
“We were connected to the police by this stage and they were asking us for the rego number. We turned our lights on and yelled the number to police a few times and then drove around him into Adin St.
“The police were on their way by then but still had not arrived … this guy found us again and we drove around into Wallace St, the other car passed us and asked if we needed help and said to follow him out of town … we started to and then felt unsure; we gave the police that registration number too.
“Then we turned into Vernon St and the 4WD found us again and started ramming us, pushing us down the street until we crashed into something, I don’t know what – I think the tow bar on our old Subaru is what saved us.
“Then he was right up close to us and my partner broke the knob off the gear stick as he rammed it into reverse to get away … we turned back into Adin St, and thankfully the lights now approaching us were those of the police.”
Liz said that after talking to police she and her partner were so terrified they were unable to stay in the Airbnb they’d booked and paid for: “We drove to Coffs Harbour to stay at a resort with 24/7 check-in and came back at midday on Friday to see police again and went and checked out Scotts Head Rd.
“I don’t think we will ever be able to go back to Scotts Head, one of our favourite beaches. We feel lucky to have survived this terror and it chills me to think this person is still in the area. We want every one to be aware of this and to be alert and stay safe.”
Macksville Police Sergeant Belinda Dalziel said officers were trying to locate the registered owner of the suspected vehicle, who is known to police.
Inquiries are ongoing and police are keen to talk to any possible witnesses. She said the couple had not given any written statements to police.
Liz said she and her partner were not willing to put their names on a police statement out of fear of retaliation should the matter come to court.
