Based on personal experiences from director Sean Anders, the story follows Pete and Ellie Wagner (Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne) as they go through the fostering process.
The couple decide that taking in one young child would be perfect for them.
However, when confronted with a spirited 15-year-old name Lizzie (Isabela Moner), they make the decision to start the process to foster her.
That’s when the Wagners find out that taking in Lizzie, also means taking in her two younger siblings, Juan and Lita.
Their family of two grows to a family of five instantly.
While everything goes smoothly at first and it seems the children are settling in, we know that it’s just too good to be true.
Lizzie becomes more and more rebellious, Juan is accident prone, and Lita can throw a decent tantrum, all making this new family life chaotic and overwhelming for Ellie and Pete.
Wahlberg and Byrne make a convincing and relatable couple.
Moner balances the role of complex, rebellious teenager who is scared of not being loved and accepted, perfectly.
The addition, Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro, as the social workers/ the (sometimes not so supportive) support group facilitators tasked with guiding the new parents through the process are a pairing that really strengthens the comedic elements of this movie, while also emphasising the reality of the fostering process.
