The oldest of the group, Nicholas Gough aged 14, jumped at the chance to represent his country in the Sports Travel Australia, Canada Tour. The next few months will see him preparing to compete in the “Track And Field” event in Vancouver, Canada.
“I’m really looking forward to representing the area, and Australia, ” Nicholas said.
The lifelong athlete has tried several different sports, including squash, soccer and football, but when asked, he picked one event as his go to.
“I don’t really have an event; if I had to pick something though, it would probably be sprinting.”
Despite the enormous task before him, the talented youngster has a laid-back attitude that even adult sporting stars would be envious of.
“I’m more excited than nervous, it will be fun, and a great opportunity.”
“More than 500 athletes from all over the world will be competing, its very special.” mother Michelle added.
Regardless of the outcome at the event in June, Nicholas is already planning for the future and training to improve.
“This year it kind of came out of nowhere, so next time I will be able to prepare a bit better, with fundraising and training,” he said.
Not to be outdone by his older brother, Lachlan Gough 13, who is also an athlete, is going to Space Camp for a week in October as part of a school run trip.
“Last year a teacher went over to NASA and had such a great time, he wanted to share that experience with kids at school,” Lachlan said.
“There are 16 of us going from Bishop Druitt College; we will get to experience living the life of an astronaut.”
While he hasn't got any solid plans to become a space explorer at this stage, it wasn't ruled out entirely.
“Maybe one day, I don’t really know, we will just have to see how it all goes first.”
While his older brothers are away, the youngest of the three, Jacob Gough is starting to compete in Squash tournaments.
“I've been playing since I was 5, I’m 7 now,” he said.
“I won my first comp; I was the division 6 winner. Then I came second in my second comp. I beat an older boy.”
Mother Michelle has done her best to help the boys with fundraising efforts for the trips; however they have hit several obstacles with scholarships and the “Go fund me” page. Anyone looking to help the boys in their fundraising efforts can contact Michelle at 0434 269 904.
