In the interests of public safety, Back Creek footbridge at South West Rocks will remain closed indefinitely as Kempsey Shire Council assesses options for its replacement.

Council’s general manager, Craig Milburn, said the decision had not been taken lightly but was necessary to ensure the community’s safety.
“Council became aware of significant structural issues with the footbridge earlier this month (January 3) and closed it based on the advice of engineering experts,” Mr Milburn said.
“We completed temporary repairs to the brackets supporting the treated effluent pipeline to brace the structure in the interim while further structural investigations determined the extent of repairs needed.
“Investigations indicate that the maintenance that would be required to re-open the footbridge is significant in contrast to the use by the local community.”
A report will go to the February meeting of council outlining the program and timing for replacement of the footbridge.
Council has asked the public to continue to heed the safety warnings and barricades restricting access to the footbridge.
“We are appealing to locals and visitors to respect the seriousness of this issue and keep off the footbridge,” Mr Milburn said.
“Anyone wilfully damaging council property and attempting to jump off the footbridge is potentially putting themselves and others at risk.”
Boating access in Back Creek continues to be unaffected by the footbridge closure.
