St Joseph's, Kempsey West and Aldavilla Primary Schools participated in the NSW Rugby program, which involved taking the students through drills, skills and the basics of the sport.
The three schools also faced off in competitive matches in the Under-10 and Under-12 age groups.
NSW Rugby Development Officer Joel Cooper said while there is a competitive aspect to the day, the main focus is to introduce rugby union to the students.
"There's a fair few players who haven't played the sport before," Cooper said.
"Today is to get the kids involved in the sport, give them an understanding of how to play and to connect them with the local club, which is of course the Kempsey Cannonballs.
"The kids take part in skill based drills, we take them through the main components of rugby and then they play a few games.
"During the matches we will stop and explain rules at times - we want the students to understand the game."
The top teams from the two age groups will advance to play at a carnival against schools from across the North Coast at Crescent Head.
