The term Pin Up Model was derived during the world wars when service personnel would have a Pin Up girl photo or poster as the mascot for their unit. Pin Ups were often painted on the nose cones of bombers and fighter planes and are still used today on the nose cones of Virgin Airlines planes.
Keeping the memory of the Pin Ups alive is the Pin Up family of enthusiasts who model fashions from the 'Pin Up' era by having Pin Up Competitions and that is what will be taking place at the Bowraville Theatre. The competition is being brought to town and arranged by Miss Dale Velvet-Rose, a devote of the movie star glamor of the 1930s through to the 1960s.
Miss Dale grew up watching movies from this era and says that it isn't just about the dress that you wear it is also how you accessorise it with hats, stockings, shoes, handbags, gloves and parasols - it's a whole outfit - it gives you a confidence and brings forth your inner beauty. She entered her first such competition in 2011 and fell in love with the concept.
This will be the second time Miss Dale has run this type of event at the Bowraville Theatre. Miss Dale chose the Bowraville Theatre as she loves the energy and the history of not only the theatre but the town of Bowraville as a whole.
Miss Dale held a Vintage Fashion/Variety afternoon in Bowraville in July 2018 and said she found the Bowraville Theatre committee and the venue to be delightful. Miss Dale added "what a better venue to hold a Vintage Pin Up Competition than a 1940's restored theatre".
She also added how intimate the venue is, which enhanced the experience of those attending and the Pin Ups competing. Miss Dale went on to say running this event also contributes to funding for the theatre and therefore the maintenance of this wonderful piece of history. Miss Dale would one day like this event to grow it into a mini weekend festival to let more people see this quaint historic town.
It is important to know that the Miss Pin Up Competition is a G Rated family friendly event. Even though the Pin Ups are modelling lingerie and nightwear in one of the segments it is vintage inspired lingerie/nightwear and is tasteful and not revealing.
Competition categories
There will be three categories in the competition: Miss Classique, Miss Modern and Madame D'Elegance.
There will be 18 gorgeous Pin ups parading and posing in three outfits each - daywear, lingerie/nightwear (1940s and 1950s inspired) and evening wear - 54 outfits in total.
The Pin Ups have props that might be true vintage or handmade and from that they do poses using the props. Pin Up is about bringing a vintage photograph to life.
