Under law, pets are required to be microchipped by six weeks of age and registered by six months of age.
They must also have a collar with a tag stating the pet's name and owner's contact number.
Too often, an animal's microchip is not up-to-date or there's been a change of owner which can result in delays in the pet being reunited with its family.
Microchips: Check contact details
If you have found a dog, please check to see if it's wearing a collar and tag with the owner's details.
Animals sometimes wander away or get frightened and leave their home and become lost.
This can be very stressful for both the owner and the pet.
If your animal is missing, it is important that you notify Council's Customer Services Centre on 6566 3200 within 24 hours.
Council will then change the status of your pet's microchip with the NSW Companion Animals Register, preventing others from claiming the animal as theirs.
Council displays photos of all impounded animals on its website within 24 hours of them being housed in our holding facility.
To give yourself peace of mind, I encourage you to visit the website to see if your missing pet may have been rescued by Council's Rangers.
Our goal is always to reunite owners with their pets, wherever possible.
Pound's search for owners
Sadly, our pound is currently full, and we are searching for the owners of some of these animals.
