Working at Beranghi and across the hinterland of Crescent Head with partners including the Mid North Coast District of the Rural Fire Service, Kempsey Shire Council, the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust and Macleay Landcare, the NCC Bushfire Program will be a holding a free one day workshop exploring the biodiversity of the area and facilitating discussions about the best ways to manage fire risk, weeds and to maintain conservation values.
The workshop is being held on Tuesday June 4 and is targeting landholders with native vegetation in the hinterland forests west of Crescent Head.
"Beranghi has extensive areas of privately owned old growth forest with this landscape having some of the largest areas of old growth forest in private ownership near the coast," Bushfire Program Ecologist Mark Graham said.
"These forests are the habitat of many threatened species including threatened forest owls, the Yellow-bellied Glider and the Koala and the area has many other significant conservation values such as having important coastal floodplain wetlands.
"The management of fire in this landscape is important for ensuring that these unique conservation values are protected and that these incredible native species have a viable future."
The workshop will commence at 8:30am at the Crescent Head Hall, followed by a bus trip into the bush at Beranghi.
A nocturnal fauna spotlighting walk will be held in the evening at Beranghi Road.
