The latest reunion, attended by 16 former students, was held on Saturday May 18 at the Hat Head Bowling Club.
The first reunion of the students was held in Kempsey in May 2003 to celebrate the 60th birthdays of some of the students and the 40th anniversary of the closure of Kinchela Creek Primary School in May 1963. The reunion was organised by Imelda Dyson who continues to organise the event each year.
From then the interest has grown and get-togethers have been organised each year.
In 2013, the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Kinchela Creek Primary School, a gala event was organised, partly hosted by the present Kinchela Primary School and attended by over fifty former students.
Both Kinchela Creek Primary School and Summer Island School are held in high regard by former students, many of who are in their 80s and 90s. These former students continue to meet annually to remember old times and tell the stories of their schools.
Plans have already been made for the next reunion at the Hat Head Bowling Club in 2020.
