Both teams displayed some rust at the outset after two consecutive washouts. The Bluesox got on the board first in B grade, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning on the back of three Brewers errors.
From there, Bellingen's defence and Paul Holding's pitching stifled Woolgoolga, holding them scoreless in the second and third innings, with Braiden Spalding taking two outfield catches in the second and Holding picking a Bluesox runner off of third base in the third. But Bellingen's offence struggled to fire, with five runners left on base without scoring over the first three innings.
Down 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Brewers finally pushed two runs across, sparked by Darren (Jacko) Jackson's single and Hunter Bake-Smith's double. The Bluesox got one of those runs back in their half of the fourth on a long leadoff home run, but that would be the last time they would score.
Bellingen scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to edge ahead, 5-4, with Matt Bryant and Jacko driving in the runs. Then Holding picked another runner off third base in the bottom half of the inning to shortcircuit a one-out bases-loaded threat.
In the top of the sixth inning, Callum Rayner beat out a two-out infield hit, capped by an overthrow, to bring home two more runs for the Bellingen. The Brewers then retired Woolgoolga without scoring to close out the 7-4 win, with Rayner taking a sharp catch in center field. Bellingen's second consecutive win against the Bluesox bolstered their position atop the B grade ladder.
The A grade match between the two clubs followed a remarkably similar pattern to the B grade encounter. The Brewers scratched out two unearned runs in the top of the first, only to give back five in the bottom of the inning, as both sides looked shaky in the field. From there, the defences stiffened and both teams were held off the scoreboard for the next two innings.
As in B grade, Bellingen's offense came to life in the top of the fourth inning, tallying five runs to take a 7-5 lead. Scott Hansen led off the inning with a sharp single, the next two batters were retired, but then the Bluesox pitcher's control deserted him: he walked three straight batters to force in a run, Cooper Bake-Smith followed with a towering drive that eluded Woolgoolga's centre fielder for a two-run double, then Jacko's infield hit and a throwing error brought home two more runs.
Hansen, who came on to pitch for the Brewers in the second inning, notched a third scoreless frame in the bottom half of the fourth. Bellingen came up in the top of the fifth and tacked on what would prove to be a critical insurance run to increase their lead to 8-5, as Hansen lined another single and scored on Hunter Bake-Smith's double.
The Bluesox wasted little time in the bottom half of the inning narrowing the Brewers lead to one, 8-7, with Aiden Banks belting a two-run home run. Jacko came on in relief of Hansen and hit the first batter he faced to put the tying run on first, but Bryant snared a soft line drive and doubled the runner off first. The Bluesox put another runner on base, but Jacko finished the game with a strikeout as Bellingen survived to take their first A grade win of the season.
Bellingen will be back in action next Saturday against the Sawtell Dodgers.
