Eighty-two travelled from near and far to relive their memories of working at a productive breeding ground for broadcasters. The older we get, the better we were.
Sharing the weekend with Adelaide City Councillor Phil Martin (late '60s at just 15 years of age), we were very taken with how Kempsey has changed, grown and modernised.
Most impressive was the presentation of the retail area. Street furniture and pagolas along with cleanliness and not many vacant shops.
It was pleasing to be able to look up lane ways and see that they were not repositories for rubbish, weeds and a lack of pride in appearance.
Also noteworthy were the entrances to the town. Tree lined and manicured.
These things don't happen by chance so congratulations to your community leaders who obviously set the example to ensure that Kempsey can be a great place to call home.
This would come down to the work done by the mayor, councillors, business leaders and the enthusiasm of the community generally.
Certainly we'll be promoting the Slim Dusty Centre, buying an Akubra hat and having a chilled glass of light beer at the West Kempsey Hotel.
A terrific weekend. Thanks, Kempsey.
