Among the hundreds of people who have gone through the centre in the last few days is Amanda Jackson, and Ric Lang who have been unable to return to their home at Hickeys Creek Road, Millbank since last Saturday.
"I came out Saturday to get some things in town, then I was told I couldn't go home, I flew back anyway to get Amanda and the dog, then we were sent here," Ric said.
"This might be us for Christmas, camping out, there hasn't been any word about our home, we had a look on a satellite image, and it's still there, but we are unsure when they update them, it might have changed, we don't know."
"Even if we still have a house, the fallout will be horrendous, as soon as the fire came through, we lost all power and phone reception, who knows how long it will take to fix," Amanda said.
The Macleay has seen a lot of devastation and sadness recently, but Amanda and Ric are in awe of how the community has dealt with the tragedy.
"It's extraordinary, everyone here is watching out for each other, and everyone upriver is looking out for each other, it really shows the strength and courage of the community," Ric said.
"A mate comes in and does regular checks on us, and gets whatever we need from uptown, he's been flat out, I don't know if he's slept, the old Aussie spirit is alive and well in the upper Macleay."
"These kinds of situations tend to bring out the best in people," Amanda said.
"Karen Anderson and the Wilwarrin Hotel, deserve some kind of medal, a lot of people would be a lot worse off if it weren't for her.
"There are strangers offering help everywhere we go, a lady moved her car closer so we could attach the ropes to it for a tent, and the volunteer staff here have been phenomenal."
There are many places still on high alert, and with no end in sight, everyone is reminded to stay vigilant.
"Compared to some people we have everything, we have ourselves and our dog Ariel, that's the most important thing," Amanda said.
"You can get you possessions back, it may take you a while, but you can build back up, if emergency personal tell you to go, just go, don't wait around," Ric said.
Anybody displaced by the fires can go to the Kempsey Showground at 19 Sea St, Kempsey and register to stay at the evacuation centre.
