Mayor Liz Campbell spoke of the devastating bushfires that impacted the Macleay Valley late last year and commended the RFS crews who worked tirelessly on the fire ground and in the control centre.
"I have never been so proud to be mayor, the resilience and mateship shown by the community during the bushfire disaster showed our wonderful community spirit," Mayor Campbell said.
"The support offered by the community to those in need is incredible. It was just outstanding.
"I do also want to take the time to thank our incredible RFS crews who worked to keep the community safe and contain the fire. They fought to save lives and to protect homes.
"Our community is so grateful to the RFS for all of their hard work."
It was also revealed during the ceremony that 67 homes were lost to the Carrai East bushfire last year.
Mayor Campbell presented RFS Lower North Coast Superintendent Lachlann Ison with a plaque for the control centre thanking the RFS for their hard work.
Supt Ison said the RFS have appreciated and felt the community support during the bushfire crisis.
"It was a tough year for us, especially towards the end. Friday November 8 was the worst fire day we have seen in this area," he said
"Crews in the area have had three solid months of fighting fires and there were a few weeks where we were just hammered.
"We have very much appreciated the community support throughout the bushfire season."
Mayor Campbell also announced a community day to thank the firefighters will be held in late March.
"There will be a parade so the community can have the chance to line the streets and thank our firefighters and we will also have a community day for the firefighters and their families to say thank you."
