TWO local showgrounds will undergo safety upgrades as part of a $9.2 million statewide program by the NSW Government to improve showgrounds for future generations.

Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said Kempsey and Bellingen showgrounds are among the first 17 showgrounds that have been approved for work by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment - Crown Lands.
"Kempsey Showground will get upgrades to its fire safety equipment. Fire hose reels will be installed at the main pavilion and fire hydrants and hose reels installed to service the camping area," Mrs Pavey said.
"Repairs and upgrades will also be made to the fire exit doors on the main pavilion.
"At Bellingen Showground, upgrades will be made to its electrical system. Old power poles will be replaced and some power lines placed underground.
"Building electricity meter boards will also be replaced where needed to ensure the showground's electrical system is safe for the future.
"As well as the first 17 showgrounds, more work will soon be prioritised at other showgrounds. Showgrounds will continue to be used while work is underway."
Minister Pavey said there are more than 170 showgrounds on Crown Land across NSW, with most managed by local councils, not-for-profit organisations and volunteer boards.
"Our showgrounds have once again showed their place at the heart of our communities during the bushfires with over 30 used as safe haven emergency centres for residents and their animals," Mrs Pavey said.
"Showgrounds have always been important community assets, particularly in regional towns, and we want to ensure that they are kept safe and functional.
"These days many showgrounds are multi-use facilities hosting agricultural shows, rodeos and horse clubs as well as farmers' markets, festivals, caravans and camping, men's sheds, sport and recreation, and in Kempsey's case, even lawnmower racing.
"Annual shows held at regional showgrounds alone are estimated to contribute about $258 million annually to the NSW economy."
