Strong flows have been recorded in the Macleay River for a number of weeks which has enabled the Steuart McIntyre Dam to achieve a 95 per cent capacity.

Council's Manager Water and Sewer, Wes Trotter, praised the community for their water conservation and said it was still important for residents to continue their water saving habits.

"Despite the restrictions being lifted in our shire, many of our neighbouring councils are still under water restrictions. Council's long-term water conservation doesn't stop here and nor should the community's," he said.

"We recognise we've been fortunate with rainfall in our catchment area, but we can't rely on luck moving forward."

Looking ahead to next summer, council encourages residents and businesses to continue to be mindful of their water usage in and around the home and workplace and to practice water saving efforts.

"We wouldn't have been able to get through the worst of the drought without the community's commitment and cooperation," he said.

"Actions taken now will prevent drastic measures having to be taken in the future."
