That's the preference for Group 3 rugby league despite the unknown future surrounding the competition after the COVID-19 curve flattens.

While chief executive Mal Drury confirmed no decisions would be made without clubs' input first, he felt half a season wouldn't be a fair outcome.

"If it's not two full home and away rounds it's not a fair competition," he said.

"It's okay for the NRL to play at neutral grounds which they do a lot of the time anyway, but our competition has always been home and away and we need to stick to that to make it fair.

"Seven rounds is not a full competition ... it's all about trying to keep the clubs afloat."

Drury's comments follow an NRL teleconference between the clubs on Tuesday where they are believed to have been told a likely restart date was early September.

Such an outcome would result in a shortened season of 15 rounds where each club played everyone else once.

Drury said the group hoped to have a future plan within the next fortnight, but were waiting on advice from the NSWRL.

"We are guided by what they do; they're looking at all the country competitions and draws," he said.

A full home and away season along with a full finals series could be possible provided they received the green light to start the competition by May 30.

Should that happen, the competition would restart soon after.

"We'd like to know by the end of April so we can give clubs three weeks of pre-season (for a June start)," Drury said.

"There's lots of logistics we can throw around the table so it's what's best for everybody."

He did, however, admit his personal preference if the competition couldn't start by May 30 was to cancel it completely rather than extend into the warmer months.

"Not every ground has lights, but it's something you could put to the clubs," he said.

"But my personal preference if it goes beyond May 31, I'd can this year and let the clubs prepare for next year

"We hope to know something more in the next 10 days."
