We're looking towards next year and will prepare our team to get ready to go for next season
- David Fernando
The Mustangs were victors in last year's grand final against the Wauchope Blues with a 34-24 scoreline.
According to Mustangs secretary, David Fernando, the club were looking strong in pre season with 75 players present at training and were likely to field four teams.
"People were jumping out of their skin to train, we were ready to go and couldn't wait to start but COVID-19 put that all to an end," said Fernando.
Despite their strength Fernando acknowledged that it was important to put the community first when considering the NSWRL's proposal of a July 18 return date.
"Because of COVID-19 we thought more about our community and the risk of spreading disease and opted to go against the plan," Fernando explained.
"Plus we were short on sponsors... if the game went ahead there would've been no crowds and our club relied on gate takings and canteen."
With the end of the 2020 season confirmed the Mustangs will now look to increase sponsorship and ensure players are ready for when they next strap on the boots.
"We're looking towards next year and will prepare our team to get ready to go for next season," Fernando said.
Meanwhile the Hastings League will await a decision from the NSWRL on whether they decide to start the 2020 season.
On June 1 the NSWRL will meet to review the July 18 return date with Hasting League's Geoff Connor stating that clubs are happy to wait on the NSWRL's decision.
"Most clubs are happy to have a wait and see approach whilst the NSWRL considers the start date," Connor explained.
