In a report that will be tabled at Thursday's council meeting, the general manager, Michael Coulter, recommends the council enter into an Memorandum of Understanding with Forestry Corp, seek gateway approval for a rezoning of the land from the NSW Govt and EPA (the land is within 500 metres of a residential R5 zone) and prepare the necessary Environmental Impact Statement to meet the specific legislative requirements for a development application should the rezoning be supported.
Mr Coulter said the acquisition of the land would secure the Valley's landfill disposal requirements for decades to come.
"The additional land will also mean the council has access to 1.5 million cubic metres of material for daily cover rather than have to risk importing this and having to pay the applicable waste levy on this material (currently $75.70 per tonne)," Mr Coulter said.
He said council staff were currently clarifying the request for compensation by Forestry Corp for the "current and future loss of commercial timber on the site".
"Our understanding is the area will be logged by the Forestry Corporation before any landfilling activity."
Councillors will discuss and vote on the item at their meeting on July 16, from 5.30pm.
