With a win needed to maintain pressure on the top two sides the Mustangs prevailed well and truly, walking away from Verge Street Oval 24-14 victors against Port City Breakers.
Coach Reuben Jones is delighted to see his side can put together a win despite not playing to the best of their ability.
"It was a patchy performance again but the boys came good when it mattered", he told the Argus.
"It was a back and forth match with tries constantly scored at both ends."
Try-scorers for the Mustangs were Sam Dunn, Ethan Thompson, Tim Bull, Chris Bull and Harrison Nemme with Ivan Madden awarded man of the match for his side with another stellar performance from the second-rower.
Jones was particularly happy with the way in which his forwards continue to step up despite coming up against bigger packs every week.
"The Breakers were another big team but our boys dominated in the forward pack despite being smaller," he said.
"From my experience, Kempsey sides are always tough no matter what sport it is and the boys were no different."
With players withdrawing throughout the Mustangs season, under 16's Kempsey Dragons players Flynn O'Loughlin and Chris Bull have constantly stepped up for the side, playing two games most week.
In more junior rugby league action, the Dragons under 14's side defeated Sawtell Panthers 28-0 to cement their spot in first place.
The Smithtown Tigers club also had a great day out, coming away with wins in various age groups.
The under 12's came away with a 18-6 win over Coffs Comets with the 14's also winning.
