"He said no because apparently he had too many girls chasing after him," Peter and Janice's daughter Gaye told the Argus.

"It took a bit of romance to win him over."

Win him over Janice did and on September 10 the happy couple celebrated 60 years of marriage.

The secret to the marriage isn't simple either.

"There's plenty of fights and plenty of making up," Gaye laughs.

"The key might be one letting the other think they're the boss."

Peter and Janice have been a formidable team over the years and are well known for their success on the racecourse.

Peter was born to train horses after his father worked horses for camp-drafts and his mother trained them for racing.

It was on the track where both Peter and Janice met and on September10 1960 they married at Kempsey Anglican Church.

After moving from Kinchela to Gladstone, Peter ended up training hundreds of horses and won plenty of prestigious titles along the way.

None more so than with Schwantz, who secured Peter's first win in Sydney in 1993.

"Not many stick to horse training, you either go broke or bald or both," Gaye previously told the Argus.

Peter's previously admitted he wouldn't be able to do it without the help of Janice who completes all of the paperwork.

He still trains horses with his family - four-year-old gelding Lost Light securing a place in Race 5 at Kempsey on September 7.
