One of our great family traditions is a drive to the tip. A big old journey with a ute, truck or trailer full of rubbish from the garage, the garden or the attic that we're going to dump to make space at home and to help us feel good.
It's a tradition made of thousands of family weekend drives that date back a century.
And it feels good, so very good, to get rid of clutter. It's the same sense of satisfaction that helped Netflix make Marie Kondo a star.
The thing is, while it's great to get rid of that clutter, we shouldn't be dumping - or tipping - it into landfill. We know landfill is expensive to ratepayers and should only be the last resort for the worst waste.
When it comes to unwanted items, we should be giving them a new life.
Welcome to National Recycling Week 2020.
Now in its 25th year, National Recycling Week (Monday to Sunday, November 9-15) provides an important opportunity for councils, workplaces, schools and individuals to improve their recycling knowledge, build better recycling habits and build trust in recycling.
A few decades ago, recycling meant paper and bottles that went into a new bin.
Now there are so many more ways to avoid sending your unwanted stuff to landfill.
Please join Kempsey Shire Council as we celebrate National Recycling Week 2020 and focus on the benefits of recycling. This year's theme is 'Recovery - A future beyond the bin'.
If you want to do your bit to reduce the cost to ratepayers of waste, and to save our environment, then this week you are invited to value your resources and to give them a second life.
We invite you to reduce your habit of buying brand-new items, and instead reuse and recycle and seek out opportunities to find a second-hand option for your next purchase.
Reducing our waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and our need for new materials. Reducing and reusing can also save you money at home and in the workplace.
We only want to tip - or dump - the very worst of our waste. Everything else should get recycled or even better, reused. That's why council has a Waste Management Facility. To manage our waste and work towards recycling and reusing everything we can.
