The Barrunbatayi Dilpaati Futures Planning and Support pilot program, a new support service joint project by Burrun Dalai Aboriginal Corporation and Uniting, will help provide support and future planning for youth aged 17 to 25.
CEO of Burrun Dalai, Dana Clarke, said the two organisations partnered together to further assist local youth.
"The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) approached us to pilot this program in Kempsey and if it's successful, it will be rolled out across the state," she said.
"The aim is to help support youth who have left the foster care system and need help planning their future. It's important for young people to be given access to education and the resources they need to move forward into adulthood.
"They will be set up with a case worker who will help them set out goals and work out how much support they will need in the future. The support could be anything from housing, education, employment or technology support."
The program is a three-year pilot and is available to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. There are already 44 young people involved and a further two offices have been established in Coffs Harbour and Taree.
"Kempsey was chosen for the pilot because of the high number of youth coming out of the foster care system in the area who need that further support," Dana said.
"Having a Future Coach will hopefully guide young people towards their goals while supporting them along the way."
Young people who are interested in joining the program are encouraged to get in touch with Barrunbatayi Dilpaati Futures Planning and Support by calling 1800 4 FUTURE or by calling into the office at 1/146-148 Belgrave Street, West Kempsey.
