A UN Women global initiative, the 16 Days of Activism runs from International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 through to International Human Rights Day on December 10.

Kempsey Families and the Love Bites Committee of the Macleay are the force behind the campaign at a local level, with support from Kempsey Shire Council.

"Kempsey Families is a part of the Domestic Violence Monitoring Committee (KDVMC) which co-ordinates the Love Bites Program across the Macleay Valley in partnership with NGO's, Police, Health, and other local support services," Kempsey Families Women & Children's Advocate Ashleigh Howe said.

"Every year our Lovebites Committee run the program in all of the Macleay Valley high schools, with Year 10 students taking part. This year we have put together flags using two selected artworks that have been installed in Smith St."

Year 10 students Emma Ross from St Paul's College and Anton Atkinson from Macleay Vocational College are the two artists chosen to have their work represented for the 16 Days of Activism.

"I did this artwork while doing the Lovebites program to show the community that the Macleay Valley is against domestic violence and we support people that want to get away from those difficult situations," Emma said.

The banners were made possible by council's $1000 grant to the Lovebites program in September.

"We would like to thank Kempsey Shire Council staff for taking part in the fundraiser and for the $1000 cheque that went towards getting our flags printed," Ashleigh said.
