However, a number of sporting clubs throughout the area have a reason to smile after receiving funding under Kempsey Shire Council's community grants program.
The program offered funding for active not-for-profit community groups so they can deliver community-led projects that benefit a range of age groups, interests and locations throughout the Shire.
A total of eight sporting clubs were recipients of funding that will assist in improving facilities and attracting new members.
Macleay Valley Mountain Bikers Club:
One of the region's fastest growing clubs received a total of $1,912 to improve trail signage.
"This funding will help us in marking all trails at the Kalateenee Mountain Bike Trails," Craig Hale of the Mountain Bikers Club told the Argus.
"We'll be able to mark down routes with kilometres so people are able to choose the distance they'd like to travel and don't get lost."
Sara Gambaro, another member of the club, added this will be a community effort.
"We'll be utilising the skills of our club members to assist in the labour work involved," she said.
"Special mention needs to go to Vincent Lee for all his work in writing the grant application."
Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club:
The Dragon Boat club received $2,500 to put towards new paddles and life jackets.
"This will mean the club will have a full set of paddles, making it easier for new members to join in," club member Belinda Fowler told the Argus.
The club usually has four events a week with rowing on Saturday 7am, Tuesday and Thursday 4:30 & 5:30pm and 6:45am Wednesday morning.
Kempsey Tennis Club:
The club received $2,266 for new seating and a BBQ.
Previous seating at the tennis courts was outdated and this funding is welcome news for the club.
"The old seating was due for an upgrade and the ability to play tennis and then have a BBQ will make things more enjoyable," Elizabeth Carroll of the Tennis club said.
Kempsey Tennis Club has a Thursday night ladies social event and Wednesday competitions.
South West Rocks Surf Life Saving Club:
SWRSLSC received $2,500 for new racing boards that will, in particular, help nippers compete to the best of their abilities.
Lower Macleay Magpies RLFC:
The club received $2,449 in funding for training equipment.
Smithtown Tigers RLFC:
$2,040 for the club will be going towards training equipment.
Rovers Cricket Club:
Rovers will put their $2,440 in funding towards updating their scoring equipment.
