Double penalties apply for speeding, seat belt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences; however, the fines stay the same.
According to the RMS website, any active demerits points you've accrued will remain on your record for a total of 3 years and four months.
Learner and P1 licence holders will have their license suspended for at least three months for any speeding offence.
This is the fourth double demerit period where active Mobile Phone Detection Cameras are being enforced and fines issued.
Drivers caught using their phones during a double demerit period will be hit with a hefty $457 fine and ten demerits.
Only NSW and ACT have double demerit points in place during holiday periods, Victoria has never had double demerits, and Queensland uses double penalties year-round.
Speed increases both the risk of having a crash, as well as the severity of the crash outcome. The faster you are going:
- The more time is needed to react and avoid a crash
- The stopping distance required increases
- The impact of a crash is more severe
- The likelihood of death or serious injury increases
