Maria previously worked in the fitness industry as an aerobics instructor and as a personal trainer. She had always been mindful of what she was eating, however in June 2018 she found herself at the heaviest weight she had been and a blood test revealed she was at risk of becoming a type 2 diabetic.
"My journey really started when I went for a blood test and my blood sugar levels were high," she said.
"I always thought I was eating the right foods and would eat a low fat diet, but I started looking into more of a low-carb way of eating and discovered it worked for me."
Maria did hours of research and learnt a great deal about the benefits of a low-carb diet.
"One of the first books I read was Dr Peter Brukner's book which really helped me think about food in a different way," Maria said.
"He's a huge advocate for the low-carb diet and I have followed his work."
Over the past two and a half years, Maria has been successful in reversing her pre-diabetes and has lost more than 30 kilograms.
"I'm really passionate about helping other people achieve the same results that I have and I think there are more doctors who are suggesting this diet change for people who are at risk of getting diabetes," Maria said.
Maria works with a local low-carb doctor in Port Macquarie as a health and wellness coach and also coaches people online about how to change their relationship with food.
"Anyone struggling with weight or who is at risk of diabetes, this is something that you can try to achieve results," she said.
"I'm happy to work with any doctors in Kempsey and I'm always open for coaching people locally and online."
