It can and will be said that the three wisest of the 38-strong field were the winners of last Tuesday's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club Monthly Medal Stroke event.

We'll tag Robert Johnston, Ray Moodie and Leo Wright as the Three Wise Men, for they did produce their very best (so to speak) when the seriousness comes into being.
Johnno really socked it to 'em with a performance that ended a run of outs, a round of 67 off-the-stick and his eventual 4-under 52 nett was too good for his A-grade counterparts.
In B-grade Ray finally found his best play and his 74-55 figures, albeit on a countback, led the way and he sort of proved that size does not matter. It's the size of the fight in the dog, eh!
Now, Leo, who would agree that being serious in C-grade has not been his go so far and from his opening stroke - a straight drive from the first tee - his game blossomed (so to speak).
Coached by his brother John, who faltered somewhat in B-grade, Leo's 74 reduced to a 6-under 50 nett that stood a clear five shots from his closest rival.
Stroke play does bring the best out of any a keen golfer and you can bet that this trio will be oh so prudent once again when the Gold Medal Day comes around in December.
Oddly enough, not Robert, Ray or Leo featured in the putting rider for the 14-hole round and it was Jeff Black (19), Bruce Morris (21) and John Inder (24) the respective grade winners.
Black (53) led the ball competition, with Ron Ingall, Phil Pinney, Paul Dykes, Wayne Cooper and Peter Hatton (all 55) and Graeme Dyet (56).
Nearest the pin in the Alan Macdonald Memorial $100 Hole-in-One at the third hole were Effron Costenoble (A), Craig James (B) and Doug Magennis (C). At the eighth Mal Blanch (A) won, whilst James - with a 6-iron- made it a double for the day.
Chip-ins were performed by Dyet, Hatton and Black.
Today's event is a 14-hole Stableford with the back nine holes dominating and any visitor to our Nature's Wonderland is invited to take part. Tee-off is 9am.
