The organisers, Macleay Living Sustainability (MLS), are now gearing up for a full day of vital discussions and practical workshops at the sustainability forum on achieving a just transition to a low carbon economy.
This all-day event will be held on Saturday 19 June 9 o'clock at Melville High School in South Kempsey.
"The forum will be packed with powerful speakers and hands-on workshops, all leading to community resilience and action on sustainability and climate justice," MLS media spokesperson Dr Ella Dixon said.
"The morning panel and the workshops will give successful examples of sustainable living and grassroots action on climate change.
"The numerous panel speakers and workshop presenters will bring diverse local voices into conversation and tell their inspiring stories of survival, hope and regeneration."
"I hope this forum can be the spark for conversations about what we as individuals can create on our own," speaking for the young generation, Melville High School student Angelina Burke said.
Renewable power expert Jarra Hicks visiting from Elands will participate in the morning and afternoon workshops on community power projects.
"I will share inspiring stories and pictures from communities that have set up their own renewable energy projects as a way to bring their communities clean energy, income, new skills, action on climate change, empowerment and more", Hicks said.
The afternoon will focus on joining the dots on climate related problems and solutions to them.
The aim is to create momentum for new community projects and ongoing discussions.
"We are so lucky to be joined by Mark Graham, Bellingen Nature Company's Principal Ecologist and a renowned local ecologist who dedicates countless hours fighting to protect endangered species in the Kalang and surrounds and speaking out against unsustainable development in the region", Dr Dixon said.
"Guest speaker, Amanda Cahill, founder of The Next Economy, who featured in the 2040 film, will be discussing the economic tools and practices we can use to ensure the long-term wellbeing of both people and planet, but also to support communities across Australia to implement these approaches to strengthen and stimulate their local economies."
Dr Mark Byrne, Energy Market Advocate from the Total Environment Centre, whose presentation at MLS's second screening of the 2040 film generated lively discussion, will also be presenting at the forum on community energy projects.
"I am passionate about the role of distributed energy resources like solar, batteries and flexible demand, especially in making the energy system resilient to the accelerating impacts of climate change," he said.
