Described as a mouth-watering, once in a generation listing by the property agent, the hospital on the hill received many enquiries from interested parties before it was sold on June 7.
"Following an extremely competitive sales process that generated around 30 enquiries, the Government has exchanged sales contracts for the former Macksville Hospital site with Romanous Developments," a Department of Planning, Industry and Environment spokesperson said.
"The sale is due to settle later this year.
"This is a great outcome for a site which became surplus following the opening of the new $73 million Macksville District Hospital in 2020.
"Proceeds from the sale will go to NSW Health to be reinvested into improved infrastructure and better services for the people of NSW."
The old Macksville District Hospital has been at the same location since it was officially opened in a ceremony on December 6, 1958, by the Minister for Health for NSW, William Frances Sheahan.
The site, which is currently zoned for residential use, still has many purpose-built hospital buildings in varying states of decay, requiring significant investment to make them either habitable or ready to be demolished.
According to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment spokesperson, the new owner is already hard at work trying to achieve one of those outcomes.
"Romanous Developments is currently exploring options for the future use of the site, but is keen to activate this locally important, regional asset," the spokesperson said.
"They are committed to working collaboratively with the Nambucca Valley Council and the NSW State Member of Parliament to deliver a positive outcome for Macksville, and the residents of the Nambucca Valley."
