KEMPSEY Shire Council is donating plants to schools and encouraging residents to get involved this National Tree Day as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental initiatives.
Council will gift either a fruit tree, seasonal vegetable or native plant to each of the 43 schools in the shire to encourage them to take part in National Schools Tree Day on Friday, July 30.
Council's coordinator Civic Services, Katy Rogan, said while there will be no public events this National Tree Day, the rest of the community is encouraged to participate on Sunday, August 1, by planting a tree where possible in their backyard or garden.
"National Tree Day is a great excuse to venture outdoors to enjoy the sunshine while doing your bit by planting trees, herbs or shrubs and connect with nature," Ms Rogan said.
"Take the opportunity to educate yourself or your kids on the benefits of giving back to the environment.
"So, roll up your sleeves and let's get our hands dirty to improve the health of our environment and to help our native flora and fauna thrive."
Founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Oliva Newton-John, National Tree Day has become Australia's largest collective tree planting and environmental education event.
