The South West Rocks Marlins will come together this weekend to celebrate something special.
Sporting their indigenous jersey, the Marlins will celebrate and acknowledge the range of cultures within their club as they take on Laurieton Stingrays at South West Rocks Sports Ground (Marlin Park).
The jersey is designed by co-coach Alfie Drew.
"I wanted to capture something that was inclusive to the whole club because this club has a diverse background," Alfie told the Argus.
"The indigenous players here come from different tribes in NSW as well as overseas heritages.
"The whole thing about Marlins is coming together as one and being a family club."
Listed on the shirts are fifteen different heritages and tribes:
- Dhanggati
- Gumbaynggirr
- Gomeroi
- Anai Wan
- Torres Strait
- Bunjalung
- Yuin
- Kamilaroi
- Australia
- Cook Islands
- New Zealand
- Ireland
- Scotland
- Fiji
The process of design wasn't a simple process for Alfie as he endeavoured to ensure it was to the best possible standard.
"I sent Geoff (Marlins president) two different designs - I had one then I wasn't happy with it and re-did it and designed again," he explained.
"There was a lot of rubbing out to do but I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out."
Marlins president Geoff Ball hopes to see a quality turn out for the important fixture as the side looks to climb up from sixth spot - equal fourth with Kendall and Comboyne on 14 points.
"It should be a big day and bring the community together," he said.
The Marlins were also thankful for the three sponsors who came on board for the jersey idea.
Two businesses were local with one metro indigenous organisation assisting.
"Big thanks to Paul Owens from Chillati, Corey Dotti from Dotbuild Constructions and Sherree Brenton from Josh Brenton Electrical," Alfie added.
Kick off is at 2:30
