EMERGENCY services remain at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle crash near Port Macquarie early this morning.
Just after 3.30, emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway about one kilometre south of the Oxley Highway off-ramp at Thrumster following reports two trucks had crashed.
Officers from Mid North Coast Police District and Coffs-Mid Coast Traffic & Highway Patrol found both trucks well alight. Several trees and bushes along the highway were also on fire.
NSW Rural Fire Service members extinguished the blaze a short time later.
The drivers of both vehicles died at the scene; they are yet to be formally identified.
All northbound lanes on the Pacific Highway have been closed. A contraflow is in place on the southbound lanes and is expected to be in place for some time.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and to check www.livetraffic.com for updates.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has begun.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
