The award ceremony was held via Zoom call by the Australian Association for Environmental Education, with school representatives from all over New South Wales in attendance.
"We are delighted to receive such a prestigious state award and we are excited about the projects that are going to continue into the future," Principal Kathryn Mcnee said.
"To have such a strong environmental focus and such a focus on sustainability is wonderful."
School community project coordinator Gaye Dufty said the students were extremely pleased with the award.
"We didn't expect it at all, but it's a process of lots of years of chipping away at it," Mrs Dufty said.
She said the school has been working for over a decade to continually improve their sustainability and have adopted a holistic focus in many areas including water, waste, biodiversity, food gardens and Indigenous culture.
They have a green canteen, manage green waste with worm farms and composting, and even have their own veggie gardens.
"Being semi rural and having a lot of our families come from properties made it a big focus for us," Mrs Dufty said.
Sustainability has been embedded into the curriculum, and there is an environmental team comprised of senior students.
"Our enviro team is heavily active in school, and we regard it as a leadership group and everybody wants to be on it, so that's really nice," Mrs Dufty said.
Some of the exciting projects in progress at the school include:
- "Bee-lieving in the Future Project" - $1500 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant to plant native trees, plants and bee hotels, with the aim to attract native bees and encourage pollination.
- "Water Worx Project" - Sustainable schools $15000 grant for installing water tanks.
- "Recycling Station Relocation Project" - Macleay 2021 Sustainable Schools grant.
The school wanted to say a huge thank you to all the organisations that provided grants or donations over years.
