Three Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat crews are set to get their season underway when they head north to compete in the Coffs Boat Rally this weekend.

The event will count towards the NSW State Selection and prestigious clubs are set to make the trip to Coffs Harbour in search of accumulating points from the event.
Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat captain Scott Edwards claims it’s a great chance for the three crews in attendance to compete against high quality surf boat clubs and get more experience in before the North Coast Surf Boat Series kicks off in a fortnights time.
“It will be a good judge of where we are at during these early stages of the season,” Edwards said.
“There are clubs coming up from Sydney and down from Queensland so there’s plenty of quality opposition.”
Kempsey-Crescent Head’s A grade crew (Sandy Clams), the Junior crew (Muppets) and Masters 240s (Junior Clysdales) will compete at the Coffs Boat Rally.
The A-grade side will drop to reserve grade for the prestigious carnival, as they aren’t at full strength.
While the surf boat crews will be hoping to leave with a victory, Edwards admits the trip is more about building team comradery.
“We are going away as a group bonding session and it will be good to launch and get in the water too,” Edwards said.
“With the weather being pretty terrible for the last fortnight we haven’t been able to do much training.”
The Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat crews will hold a special launch at Crescent Head beach next weekend, as they launch their new boat which was named after the late Rex Williamson.
Williamson was a member of the Kempsey-Crescent Head Surf Boat crew and swept for many crews in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
The first round of the North Coast Surf Boat Series is set to be held at Woolgoolga on November 9 and 10.
Kempsey-Crescent Head edged out Woolgoolga, who finished in second position, by a convincing 114 points.
The locals won eight of the nine rounds.
However, the Masters 200s crew was the only crew to finish in first position but the Open Women, Open Men, Under 19s and the Masters 160s finished in second position.
Kempsey-Crescent Head won’t be hosting a round this season but Edwards is hopeful they will be able to arrange a weekend to host a North Coast Surf Boat Series round next season.
