The fourth year apprentice electrician started off riding steers with the Farley brothers when he was younger and has previously competed as a junior in the Blue Moon bull ride, and as an adult last year.
“I used to go around to their place and ride steers when I was about 14, that’s when I first started,” Mr Donelly said.
“They helped me from the beginning.”
“This is probably my fourth time competing at the Blue Moon bull ride. I went in the juniors at first, and I competed last year.”
A year ago the twenty-year-old had to move away from home for work, but he travels on the weekends to various places for bull riding events.
“It depends where the rodeo is; I’m travelling weekends to events all over.”
Regardless, Mr Donelly is keen to come home and get a big win in front of the hometown crowd.
“I’d love to win at Jared and Pete's bull ride; it's in the hometown and one of the biggest in Australia. A win is definitely what I’m aiming for.”
After the big event this weekend the young bull rider hopes to continue with bull riding and maybe even go overseas to compete on a global stage.
“I will hopefully get good enough to go to the states for bull riding, that would be the goal.”
The Blue Moon bull ride kicks off this Saturday where spectators can watch Mr Donnelly compete against some of the best bull riders in the country while they raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
The gate will open at 4pm, and the bull riders will battle it out from 7pm onward.
