The Cannonballs host the Hastings Valley Vikings this Saturday.
The Vikings enter this match in great form, after they handed the South Cross University Marlins a 46-7 defeat last Saturday.
However, the Cannonballs are expected to field an improved side, after as many as six quality first grade players were unavailable for their 59-5 defeat against the Pirates.
Kempsey were close to securing victory in their season opener against the defending champions the Coffs Harbour Snappers.
They led by eight at the half-time but they fell off the pace after a Cannonballs player was shown a red card shortly after the break.
The Snappers eventually ran out 50-40 winners in the high scoring contest.
Cannonballs coach Carl Thurgood is hopeful for an improved defensive performance on Saturday.
