Two local students, Keira Morn and Tex Murdoch, were chosen to be placed on a shortlist consisting of sixteen submissions out of 413 across the nation, to vie for a position as one of 12 winning calendar pages in the 2021 Great Ocean Road Calendar.
The final judging took place on November 6 and although the duo from Melville High didn't get a spot in the calendar, their "Oreo Freak Shake" entry was highly commendable and they will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their hard work and creativity.
The programme encourages students to get creative: in teams of two, students design their own imaginative dairy creation to bring to life. The student chefs then develop and make the recipe and submit a photo of the creation to be judged.
Cheese Your Own Creation is taught as part of Melville High School's Food Technology classes and the programme involves more than 1000 students and teachers from 70 schools across Australia.
Michael Davidson, TAS teacher at Melville High School, said his students are having a lot of fun learning about all things dairy through the program.
"Cheese Your Own Creation is encouraging our students to use their imagination to bring amazing creations to life out of everyday dairy products. I am so impressed with the nutritious meals our students are creating with simple ingredients like milk and cheese," Michael said.
Tracy Wong, Great Ocean Road Senior Brand Manager, said Cheese Your Own Creation makes important links between the dairy industry, schools and local community.
"Through the programme, students gain an understanding of the dairy industry, the nutritional value of its products and the importance of the industry to regional economies - all while having lots of fun in the kitchen. I'm excited to see what the students create and trying my hand at some of their recipes," Tracy said.
Melville High Students are looking forward to participating in the programme in 2021.
