The Smithtown Riverview Hotel allows participants in the ETC hospitality training programs to use the hotel venue for work experience.
Hotel owner John Anderson said his team is proud to have received the award.
“We feel we have a responsibility and so we are playing our part by providing our venue for local job seekers. We don’t do it to gain benefit, but to assist them in undertaking some training and help with their career path,” Mr Anderson said.
A partnership with local employment and training provider ETC enabled hospitality enthusiasts the opportunity to gain practical experience on-site at the hotel through industry training programs – WorkIT and ServeIT.

“It was great to be able to watch the students in action and we hired two of them as a result. One of them is now in an Apprenticeship and the other is undertaking a Certificate III in Hospitality.”
According to Mr Anderson, dealing with staff had been a challenge for his business.
“In all honesty, it has been very difficult. I’ve found that people don’t want to work or think they know everything. My advice to other employers would be to vet carefully, put everyone on probation first, monitor your staff, and persevere,” Mr Anderson said.
“We are thankful that ETC stood beside us all the way and has helped us to get some good quality staff. Leeanne Stewart from ETC understands how our business runs and what our needs are.”
