KEMPSEY Macleay RSL Sub Branch held their annual Remembrance Day service at the Kempsey Cenotaph early last month, and despite the smoke and haze, there was still a good number of people who came to pay their respects.

"The smoke wasn't too bad, we still had a decent turnout, it's an important day to mark, a piece of history that should never be forgotten," Kempsey Sub Branch secretary, Alan Goulder said.
"The service was short, and afterward we had our luncheon put on by the ladies in the Kempsey Macleay RSL Auxiliary."
Armistice Day 1918 was the end of the Great War, now known as World War I and this year marks 101 years since the guns fell silent on the battlefields.
All around Australia services took place to mark the sombre occasion; the most significant ceremony was at the War Memorial in Canberra, where thousands show up every year to pay their respects.
The memorial was originally built to mark World War I but has since been expanded to include all wars in which Australians have served, including World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Next year the Kempsey Macleay RSL Sub Branch will again plan a small service for the area, and Alan hopes that people will continue to show their support for the event.
"Services like these are important; I hope more people come next year if they have the time," he said.
"The public is always welcome to attend and lay a wreath; and come to a light lunch in the Memorial hall afterwards."
